A Journey Through Time

Our Story

A casa do práctico is a boutique vacation rental in the heart of Foz (Lugo), Galicia: a restored stone house with a seafaring soul, tucked in a quiet alley steps from Rapadoira beach, Puerto Chico and the Foz estuary. Two independent spaces — O Baixo and A Trepía — for travellers seeking coastal authenticity, thoughtful design and the calm of the Cantabrian Sea.

Our Story

The Heritage

The Legacy of the Sea in Foz

For decades, this stone house stood as a silent sentinel on the shores of Foz. It was the home of the práctico — the harbour pilot — a figure of immense respect whose life was dedicated to the safety of others in one of the Mariña Lucense's busiest maritime enclaves.

In the treacherous waters of the Galician coast, where the Atlantic meets the Masma river mouth, the práctico was the living compass. Every ship entering harbour relied on his expert eye, steady hand and deep knowledge of tides, sandbanks and north-westerly winds.

Restoring A casa do práctico was more than a renovation; it was an act of preservation. We sought to honour the soul of this dwelling, maintaining the same quiet confidence that once guided sailors to safety.

Today, those who sleep within these walls no longer hear the harbour sirens as before, yet they still feel the slow rhythm of the tide, the cry of gulls at dawn and the promise of an Atlantic horizon unchanged for centuries.

The Protagonist

Ramón, the práctico of Foz

Local oral history tells that around 1920, Ramón — known simply as «O Práctico» — made this house his home and personal lookout. From the window facing the estuary, he watched the sky before the clock: a blanket of fog over the Cantabrian was enough to foretell hours of work ahead.

Ramón knew every stone of the channel, every deceptive glint of sun on water and every current the chart never recorded. Skippers of fishing boats, timber cargo vessels and early tugboats trusted his firm voice from the bow: «Starboard, easy… now, centre».

On stormy nights, when wind battered the granite facade, he lit the oil lamp on the upper floor — what we now call A Trepía — and stayed awake until the last boat found mooring. Below, in O Baixo, his wife Carmen prepared broth and left the door ajar in case any sailor needed shelter.

Ramón never wrote a book, but he taught the trade to two generations. When he retired in the 1960s, he left the house to the family with a single instruction: «This house faces the sea. Never turn its back on it». That sentence guided the entire restoration you see today.

The House

A stone house in the heart of the old town

A casa do práctico rises in a narrow alley of central Foz, where traditional Galician architecture — stone walls, white facades and wooden shutters — meets the everyday murmur of a town shaped by the estuary and coastal life.

The house is arranged as two independent floors. O Baixo occupies the ground level: a spacious family layout with lounge, fully equipped kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. A Trepía, on the upper floor, is a luminous open-plan attic with a double bedroom, bathroom and elevated views over the estuary.

The rehabilitation preserved the original masonry, restored the proportion of openings and modernised services without sacrificing character. The result is a premium vacation rental: contemporary comfort within a story of stone and salt.

Respecting the Essence

The renovation was guided by a philosophy of minimal intervention. We preserved the original granite masonry and the rhythmic placement of openings, allowing historic character to breathe alongside modern comfort: thermal insulation, air conditioning, fibre WiFi and fully equipped kitchens.

A Dialogue of Materials

Warm woods, natural textiles and light surfaces create a sensory connection to the Mariña landscape. Every element was chosen for its ability to age gracefully, like the house itself — the same simplicity you would find in a fisherman's refuge cared for with devotion.
